City Eye had to work for someone who couldn't actually look at it. It's a driving app — every screen, every alert, every interaction had to register in under a second, because the person using it had both hands on a wheel.
I designed City Eye end to end over four months, working solo as product designer alongside the product owner and the iOS and Android developers. Scope covered product discovery, information architecture, wireframes, high-fidelity UI, prototyping, the design system, developer handoff, and the brand identity itself.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

THE PROBLEM
Radar apps have a reputation problem — cluttered, distracting, built by people who never think about what it's like to use one at 120 km/h. The client wanted something that competed on trust and clarity, not on cramming in every feature a driver could theoretically want.
Drivers needed real-time, reliable information about speed cameras and road hazards without having to interact with their phone to get it — which ruled out most of what makes utility apps feel "functional": lists, menus, settings front and center. The business side needed the same product to support a premium subscription and sponsored locations, without turning the free experience into a stripped-down teaser for the real thing.

FREEMIUM STRUCTURE
Premium had to make money without making the free version feel broken. A radar app that hides safety information behind a paywall isn't a product decision — it's a trust problem.
The free tier stays fully functional: camera alerts, voice notifications, and reporting all work without paying. Premium's pitch is removing ads and improving the experience, not gating anything drivers actually need to stay safe. That distinction mattered for a product whose entire value is reliability — if free users get an app that withholds a hazard warning to sell a subscription, the product loses the thing it's actually selling.

CORE EXPERIENCE
The map isn't a feature of City Eye — it is City Eye. Everything else, reporting, settings, premium, account, had to earn its place around it, not compete with it for attention.
The interface centers on a live map because that's where users spend nearly all their time behind the wheel. Alerts happen mostly through voice, not the screen — drivers get warned about an approaching camera without needing to look down at all. Every other capability, reporting a new location, switching language, managing an account, is progressively revealed rather than sitting on the main screen competing with the one thing that actually matters while driving.

DESIGN SYSTEM
Map interfaces have more dynamic states than almost any other UI pattern — zoom levels, live location, alert states, reporting overlays. None of that holds together without a system underneath it.
I built a mobile design system with color tokens, a typography scale, a spacing system, and reusable components for buttons, inputs, cards, navigation, map elements, icons, and status indicators, using variants and auto layout in Figma. Because map interfaces carry so many edge cases — different alert states, zoom behavior, overlapping pins — I worked with the iOS and Android developers throughout implementation instead of just handing off a file, walking through interaction details and edge cases before they got built. The system is what let the app expand feature by feature without every new screen turning into a one-off decision.

RESULTS
No analytics to report yet — the win here was taking a genuinely complex product from a blank page to two live app stores without it ever feeling complicated to the person using it.
